One Last Look (haibun)
She takes one last look around the house to be sure all is out. She looks in the master bedroom and sees the scar on the wall made by the dresser when it was mooved out. "One last dent", she laughs to herself.
Now she goes through the closets. They're empty, other than dust and lint. It reminds her of the first time they saw them.
She goes out the garage door and closes it. Only then does she realize that she'll never be in there again.....

Sound of a Lawn Mower (haibun)
The annoying sound of a lawn mower rattles my thoughts. I walk to the window and see the old man going at it again. I wonder why it bothers me so much. Is it because of the noise or could it be because his yard looks so much better than mine?
I turn the radio louder and walk back to my desk.

birds laugh
knowing the work is futile...
sun starts to fall

Waiting For The Light (haibun)
Waiting for the light to change, he taps to the tempo of the windshield wipers. Staring at the back of a pickup, he wonders how long he will make it at work. Should he quit before he's fired?
Hearing a honk behind him, he sees that it's directed at him. He drives on...

rain falls on street
all look for shelter...
it won't cleanse my mind

We Stand At The Door
we stand at the door
holding the day,
wondering what we'll see.

will there be lights?
will they be bright or dim?
will there be windows?

we've seen all kinds of rooms.
in some we felt welcome
while others snubbed us.

some of the rooms are warm,
full of happy, loving people.
Some are cold, dark and lonely.

it's our time now.
take a big breath,
open the door.......

Some People Like Winter
Some people like Winter.
I'll like the inventor
that comes up a way
to stay warm every day.

Some people like snow.
I'll just never know
why people want ice -
for me it's not nice.

I'll always like June
when we're sweaty by noon
and the ice that you see
will be floating in tea.

So keep all your cold
that makes me feel old
'cause my dreams will soon bring
all the flowers of Spring.

The Spiderlily
The spiderlily
pops up from the dirt,
letting us all know
where she is.
Little does she know
that the world
is not impressed.
It will sneer
and heckle her

and quietly bows down.

WalMart Parking Lot on Saturday Night
bright lights full of bugs
that are agitated by the
noise and the smell

one car after another
showing the owners
life story

puddles and stains
of cigarette butts,
spit, and God knows what

shopping carts
line out an obstacle course
for tired people

kids are bouncing and yelling,
seeing the world
they miss on school nights

people overload trunks
with white plastic bags full
of what they need and don't need

this is, indeed, the
21st century
version of the Colosseum

Past and Present
She sinks into the recliner.
The distant thunder of children
Puts her to sleep.

Having too much on his mind
From drowning in his own youth,
He doesn't hear them.

Is there a warehouse, he wonders,
Where my memories are kept?
If so, can I put mine away?

One of his daughters runs in,
Complaining about her brother,
So he nods to her and sends her back.

She wakes up and asks him
What was going on.
Nothing, he says, and laughs to himself.

The future, he decides, is more important.
Then he pulls himself from the couch
To pick out some clothes for tomorrow.

Some who are first
Will soon be the last.

There's no more worry

When I'm forced with defeat.

When you see my bruise
